10 Best Hacks to get rid of Holi Colours with Proof

Holi, the festival of colors is by far my favorite Indian festival. Though there would be lots of posts on social platforms on water waste for Holi but what Holi without colors, water balloons, pichkari, just no fun isn’t it. I feel that we being top of the food chain can certainly apply ourselves to do it intelligently without wasting much water.
In Holi you want to look your best and you may be wondering for best hair oil for styling click on this post explaining best hair oil for men .
If given a choice we may buy natural and herbal or Organic colours, but sadly for that, we are left with the mercy of people around us as they may feel otherwise more likely than following your footsteps. It gets worst when they use not only use Synthetic colours but also nasty things like engine oil, petrol, oil paints, cow dung (don’t puke), mud which can cause rashes, itchy patches, and dryness.
So it becomes utmost important to be cautious about pre and post-Holi preparations regarding our skin so that you do not have to grapple with the after-effects of this lovely festival.
If you are still following along that mean two things either you are getting war-ready for the festival of colors Holi in advance good choice I must say.

Second, you are like most of us a victim of Holi’s colors which may be synthetic color or herbal ones depending on your friend's and family’s generosity and choice.

But the question is why you should you give your precious time for this post?
Here is why check out my last year's picture of Holi and here is what I did to get rid of colors.

But before I begin with do’s, let me stop and warn you about the “don’t” to remove the color.

Here is a list of “Don'ts” while trying removing color this Holi

  • Using soaps to wash your face excessively. Firstly, I do not recommend using soap on your face on any regular day too due to the very reason that your face skin is more special and sensitive than your other parts of the body and also due to the presence of high Ph value chemicals in many Soap brands in India.
  • Using hot water to rinse your face from the analogy that hot water helps cleaning your clothes too. It is one of the most basic mistakes of people. Not only it can make the situation worse, but it would also damage your skin which is already asking for help.
  • Using chemicals like Nail paint remover, thinner, Petrol for removing the colors from your skin. It is an absolute big “NO”.
  • Rinsing the face again and again with water, this is for the simple reason that your motive should be to get rid of Holi-colours and not your face (I am just kidding..lol). You would end up having dry and itching skin.
  • This one I feel is most important, trying out home remedies from online mediums like Google, Youtube without knowing your skin type.
  • Avoid using face pack like bleaches, I think for the day your face already has faced lots of chemicals, applying bleach would be the last thing you wanna try.

Now that we have stroked-out don’t from our list let us begin with our list of hack to get rid of Holi colours quickly.

1. Applying Natural oil.

An hour prior to playing Holi, apply any available natural oil available at home like Coconut, Mustard or Olive oil on the face and other exposed parts of your body like hair, hands, neck and the legs especially your foot.If you are looking for best oil for hair especially for men, click the link.
This is something you would find it written all over the walls, everywhere on the internet but it may not be true if your face skin type is dry and if you are exposed to too much of Sun (depending on which parts of India).
Here is my tip depending on different parts of India.

  1. For the Northern part of India which would be having a bit of cold due Holi is in the first week of March, it is a good choice to apply cold cream on face and mustard oil on the rest part of Bodies like hairs, hands and the legs.
  2. For the Southern part and Western part already having high-medium temperature, try applying cold-pressed Coconut oils on the face, hairs and all over the body.
  3. For Eastern parts of India having bit humidity, Olive oil is best suited to protect your skin from the colours.

2. Applying Glycerin

For your face, glycerin is one of the most suitable moisturizing agents, no wonder it is used in most of the cosmetic products related to the face.

However, given that Glycerin is also a chemical do-not blindly apply it on your face.
It is always an intelligent choice to do a patch skin test on the back of the neck or behind the back of your ear lobes and wait for 5 min before applying it over your beautiful face.
Apply Glycerin with rose water on your face from your neck towards your forehead in the upwards direction gently an hour before playing with color.
You can also apply Glycerin with rose water after you have washed your face as a skin-soothing agent.

Glycerin is mostly good for all skin types but do try a patch test before trying it for the first time.

3. Applying lemon for hair care

This tip is for vegetarian who do-not prefer applying egg and for Non-vegetarian who cannot stand the smell of yolk in your hair.
This one I stumbled upon by experiment, apply a generous amount of coconut oil in your hair and just 10-15 min before playing Holi apply strained lemon juice on your oiled hair.
You may ask why 10 mins before, this is because your hair would become a bit hard as the lemon juice dry and you definitely do not want to look like Krur Singh from Chandrakanta serial.

Jokes apart, lemon has many benefits for your hair and skin one of which is being natural bleach which helps in removing color and it is also beneficial if you have dandruff.

Do not try this tip if you have itchy scalp, broken skin already. It would give you a burning sensation otherwise.

In Hindu tradition, there is a function called Haldi which many of us would be aware of, well there is pretty the basic reason why we do that before one of the most important function of our life which is marriage.

Haldi consists of applying Ubtan (Besan paste) for Ayurvedic reasons.
Applying Ubtan helps in moisturizing skin, bringing the best skin tone and helps in reducing skin fatigue.
It is a no-brainer why this is something very useful in removing colors from your skin.

How to make Ubtan paste?
Add one spoon of Besan with milk(for normal and combination skin type) or curd(for dry skin type)and  for oily skin type add few drops of lemon at the end of making this paste, 1-2 drops of Olive oil, 1 pinch of turmeric and rose water, and apply it on your skin generously.

After five minutes, sprinkle some water on your face and rub the Ubtan in the small circular motion to remove color then rinse your face gently with cold water and pat dry.

Do not buy loose besan from the market for this as it has other unwanted harmful agents like chili powder which is not a good choice for your skin if possible try making Besan at home by grinding roasted Channa with some water in your mixer grinder.

5. Using egg for Hair nourishment.Egg-Hair-pack-to-remove-Holi-colour

Apply 1 egg yolk in your hair and leave it for min 30 minutes. This tip is for Braveheart who doesn’t get moved by terrible smell of egg.
Eggs due to its high protein values are good agents for smoothing your hair which war-borne after Holi.
You can also apply this 30 minutes before playing with color and as Natural reaction People would apply less color to you due to its smell.

Sounds like best Natural defense isn’t it. Problem solved 😊
Try adding natural fragrance agents like jasmine/rosemary oil to Egg white to avoid pungent smell from Egg.
